Caring for Your Pieces
Antique and vintage jewellery has already lived a life before it reached you, a little care keeps it ready for its next chapter.
Everyday Wear
- Put jewellery on last, after perfume, hairspray and moisturiser, and take it off first when you get home
- Avoid wearing pieces in the shower, bath, pool or sea, chlorine and salt water can dull metal and loosen old settings
- Remove rings and bracelets before cleaning, gardening, exercising or washing up, to protect both the piece and your hands
- Antique settings and clasps are more delicate than modern ones, so take a moment putting pieces on and taking them off rather than rushing
Cleaning
- A soft, dry cloth after each wear is usually all a piece needs to keep its shine
- For a deeper clean, warm water with a drop of mild washing up liquid and a very soft brush (an old, clean makeup brush works well), then dry thoroughly with a soft cloth
- Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and jewellery dips, older stones and settings can be more fragile than they look, and these can do more harm than good
- If you're ever unsure whether a piece is safe to clean at home, message us first, we're always happy to advise on the specific piece
Storage
- Store pieces separately, or wrapped individually in a soft cloth or pouch, so they don't scratch against one another
- Keep jewellery somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight and radiators
- Silver pieces will tarnish naturally over time, this is normal and part of an antique piece's character, but storing in an airtight bag slows it down
A Note on Antique Pieces
Every piece in the collection is chosen for its history and character, so a little wear, patina or an older repair is part of what makes it genuine rather than a fault. With gentle care, these pieces are made to be worn and loved for many years yet, not kept for best.
